Top 10 Application on Google Play

Many of the Android apps we've recommended aren't popular in the wider community. Of course, they're all excellent---we wouldn't suggest lousy apps---but often you can file them into the "niche" category.

For something different, let's take a step back and look at some of the all-time most popular Android apps in the Google Play Store. These are the ones that Android's two billion active users have downloaded most frequently.

1. WhatsApp

WhatsApp users in India and other countries woke up to an in-app notification about its new terms of service and privacy policy. The company informed users about the changes made in the privacy policy and terms of service.

Some users had started getting the notification on late Tuesday morning but a lot of users were greeted with the WhatsApp notification first thing in the morning. The Facebook-owned messaging app started trending on Twitter soon after users reported getting the message about its changed policies.

“WhatsApp is updating its terms and privacy policy,” the notification that is sent to Android and iOS users by the company read. Some of the key updates would include how WhatsApp processes the user's data.

“How businesses can use Facebook hosted services to store and manage their WhatsApp chats and How we( WhatsApp) partners with Facebook to offer integrations across the Facebook Company Products,” the WhatsApp notification read.

2. Facebook

The Guardian has published details of Facebook’s content moderation guidelines covering controversial issues such as violence, hate speech and self-harm culled from more than 100 internal training manuals, spreadsheets and flowcharts that the newspaper has seen.

The documents set out in black and white some of the contradictory positions Facebook has adopted for dealing with different types of disturbing content as it tries to balance taking down content with holding its preferred line on “free speech.” This goes some way toward explaining why the company continues to run into moderation problems. That and the tiny number of people it employs to review and judge flagged content.

The internal moderation guidelines show, for example, that Facebook allows the sharing of some photos of non-sexual child abuse, such as depictions of bullying, and will only remove or mark up content if there is deemed to be a sadistic or celebratory element.

Facebook is also comfortable with imagery showing animal cruelty — with only content that is deemed “extremely upsetting” to be marked up as disturbing.

And the platform apparently allows users to live stream attempts to self-harm — because it says it “doesn’t want to censor or punish people in distress.”

When it comes to violent content, Facebook’s guidelines allow videos of violent deaths to be shared, while marked as disturbing, as it says they can help create awareness of issues. While certain types of generally violent written statements — such as those advocating violence against women, for example — are allowed to stand as Facebook’s guidelines require what it deems “credible calls for action” in order for violent statements to be removed.

The policies also include guidelines for how to deal with revenge porn. For this type of content to be removed Facebook requires three conditions are fulfilled — including that the moderator can “confirm” a lack of consent via a “vengeful context” or from an independent source, such as a news report.

3. Instagram

A 33-year-old man was arrested for allegedly creating a fake profile on Instagram in the name of a woman and luring men and extorting money using the account, the Delhi Police said today.

The accused, identified as Gurgaon resident Akash Choudhary, also used to contact genuine companies and brands for promotion of their products on his fake profile by showing a large number of followers, they said.

One of his fake accounts on the photo and video-sharing site has one million followers, the police said. Choudhary was arrested yesterday.

The matter came to light after a woman complained to the police that someone had created several Instagram accounts in her name and was using her photographs downloaded from her original account.

In greed for quick money, he planned to create fake profiles of young women on Instagram and Facebook intending to befriend men and conning them, the officer said. Choudhary was also aware of revenue generation from online-advertising on social media.

The accused had purchased a separate SIM card and had downloaded social networking sites like Instagram and Facebook and had started following young women on these sites.

He used to download pictures of these women from the sites and once he had decent collection of 50 to 60 pictures he used to create a similar separate fake profile of the woman.

Through these profiles he used to invite men for "friendship" and also used to accept each and every friendship request. One of his fake profiles had one million followers, the police said.

4. Subway Surfers

Subway Surfers, developed by Kiloo Games and Sybo Games is a simple, yet entertaining arcade game available for free on iOS, Android and Kindle devices since May 24, 2012.

With objectives similar to that of Temple Run, all one must do is run through the subway away from the policeman and his pitbull.

The protagonist, a young aspiring graffiti artist named Jake, runs, jumps and dodges away from obstacles including roadblocks, trains, bridges, stoplights and pillars, all while collecting coins that enable the user to buy power ups and various characters.

Not only is the gameplay fast-paced and addictive, but there is a lot of additional in-game content that is available to purchase with either the coins you collect while playing the game or buy with real money.

Subway Surfers also changes location every month. Previous locations include Rio de Janeiro, Rome, New York and the current edition in Sydney.

Subway Surfers may well be a replica of the Temple Run games, but in this case the copycat is better than the original. The graphics are clear and crisp, and are a huge improvement from graphics of other endless-running games.

However, just like any other highly addictive and simple game, it gets boring fast. After the initial excitement of Subway Surfers wears off, it becomes staler than a loaf of bread from Christmas that nobody wants to eat.

Snap is unveiling some important changes for Snapchat at its Snap Partner Summit. The navigation has been rethought with a new action bar at the bottom that lets you access Snap Map and Snap Originals in just a tap.

Snap Map is also getting some brand new features to compete head-to-head with Google Maps. A new banner called “Happening Now” is also being rolled out to all users in the U.S. with a curated selection of stories at the top of the Discover tab.

Snap has been testing the new design for a while and it is now official. While Snapchat has always been a bit obscure to figure out for newcomers, navigation has been greatly simplified with the redesign.

For instance, Snapchat now has a good old navigation bar with five tabs at the bottom. The company calls it the action bar, as it’s supposed to change contextually based on what you’re doing. But at heart, it’s simply a way to access some of Snap’s most popular products in just a tap.

While many other competitors have sprung up, such as Apple's FaceTime or Google's Duo, Skype remains the go-to for video chat for many individuals and businesses.

Skype is a video, audio, and text communication app available across multiple platforms. Free to download and use, for the most part, Skype is an excellent tool for keeping in touch with friends or working remotely with colleagues.

In a support tweet, Twitter confirmed it’s had an issue — writing: “You may have had trouble sending and seeing Tweets” — but added the problem had been fixed. It didn’t offer further details about the issue.

10. Candy Crush Saga

Candy Crush Saga is the most popular mobile game in the U.S. after a dramatic comeback in the third quarter. As the mobile game crossed its fifth anniversary this week, its tally has crossed 2.73 billion sugary downloads.

In the third quarter that ended September 30, the match-3 game generated more than $250 million in revenue, up 97 percent from the same period a year ago, according to measurement firm Sensor Tower.

More than 1 trillion game rounds have been played in the game since its launch, and 350 trillion candies have been swiped to date. At this rate, the $5.9 billion that Activision Blizzard paid to acquire King in 2015 looks like a deal.

Candy Crush Saga has a social media fan base of 80 million. That’s not bad for a game made with a tiny team led by Sebastian Knutsson in Stockholm, Sweden. King now has more than 2,000 employees worldwide and more than 293 million monthly active users.

And it has spun out new games like Candy Crush Soda Saga and Candy Crush Jelly Saga. It even has its own game show. For the fifth anniversary, King launched a bunch of in-game rewards for players.
